The Southern Hemisphere International School of Scottish Fiddle was founded in 2004 to foster the music and culture of Scotland and to explore the cross over of this culture into others, by bringing together top international teachers with students of all levels for learning, fun, and fellowship.

We aim to create a relaxed and comfortable learning environment for all attendees regardless of age or ability level.

Classes are divided by participants' ability to learn by ear, into three different levels: slow, moderate and fast. While classes are taught aurally music is generally available by the end of the week for participants to take home.

Each fiddle class has the same number of sessions with all the instructors, and there are usually four fiddle sessions per day. Accompaniment classes are flexible depending on numbers, allowing for both group and individual tuition.

As well as the set classes there are a variety of elective classes each year which include informal chat sessions with all our instructors.

The evenings are taken up with dancing, ceilidhs, masterclasses, concerts, and of course, jam sessions!

Who is SHISSF for?

Any fiddlers (violinists/violists) who are interested in and want to learn more about Celtic music, and are excited about improving and developing their skills, making new friends, and having a great time!

Any accompanists (all instruments welcome - piano, guitar, cello, etc. ) who want to develop their improvisational skills for accompanying fiddle tunes. Be prepared to learn heaps, laugh a lot and meet great people!
